The RVT-R Reader (in early sources also known as RVL-R Reader) is a test-kit version of the Wii that uses an optical drive capable of reading special burnt RVT-R Discs. There are two known versions of the RVT-R Reader; the normal one, and the E3 2006 one which posesses a black shell similar to the mockup shell demonstrated at E3 2005.

The RVT-R Reader can only boot games from discs and does not have any internal storage for disc games, only WiiWare & Virtual Console games. The RVT-H Reader is the only Wii development unit which can store disc games.

E3 2006 Reader

A special RVT-R Reader (then known as RVL-R) was distributed for E3 2006 - documentation in teru-sama mail specifies exactly which demos were running on these units, one of them being the early Wii Sports demo. One photo has been found which seems to indicate that these consoles still used the "Revolution" branding (as the Wii branding was unannounced until partway through their distribution period) with a shell very similar to that seen at E3 2005. Gigaleak files show that these special units had a serial number format of RTPAB2xxx (akin to the NTPAB serial number prefix seen on the FCC DS), and used an NDEV 1.x-like setup with a 1.x Hollywood.
