Unknown 64DD prototype

This unknown 64DD prototype was sold on Mercari on 2026-07-19 for 1,100,000 yen. The seller confirmed that this unit does not work, and the transparent disk does insert correctly on this unit, however it does not work on regular units as there's no shutter mechanism.

The motherboard as seen through the plastic shows a similar chip placement compared to 64DD drives for development use motherboards, however, the H8/300 series CPU responsible for interfacing between the Nintendo 64 system and 64DD hardware is missing, the CIC chip is missing, and instead of the IPL ROM placement we can find more unpopulated placements for a bigger chip and a smaller chip that suggests a potential Flash memory chip. The motherboard identifier could be F31P06Y.

The seller said that he is unsure of what this unit is for.
