Region code
This article is a stub. |
The Region code (unofficial name) is a recurring string printed on Nintendo consoles, presumably used to identify region-specific revisions of a given product.
It follows the format: C/{Console}-{Region}-{Revision}, where {Console} is the model-specific three-letter identifier, {Region} is the three-letter region identifier, and {Revision}, when present, is a number indicating the hardware revision. For example, C/USG-USA-1 corresponds to the second North American revision of the DS Lite.
Although it appears to be primarily intended for internal use, region codes can also provide useful information to end users in certain contexts.
Wii
The Wii's region code can be used to determine whether the console contains a vulnerable version of boot1, allowing modification of boot2. With the exception of Korean units (and possibly other localized variants), units that do not display a revision number (e.g. C/RVL-USA) are guaranteed to be vulnerable. However, the converse is not necessarily true, as some vulnerable units do display a 1 revision number.
Some European consoles display higher revision numbers (up to 4). Since all of these consoles have a patched boot1, it is currently unclear what those revision numbers were used for, or whether a similar situation exists in other regions.
